Why does opening and closing the door make the printer think toner has been added?

One thing that bothers me with my first laser printer/copier is that it keeps saying it's out of toner and stops printing, but just by opening and closing the cartridge door every 50-100 pages, I can DOUBLE the page count before any noticeable loss in print quality.

That means people that change the cartridges when it says out of toner are throwing out half the toner.

Firstly, why does it falsely say it's out of toner when there's half left?

Secondly, why does just opening the door and closing it (often shaking the cartridge isn't even required) cause it to magically think it has more toner?

Thirdly, is there anyway to force it to print until it's truly out without having to open and close the door 200 times for the last half of the cartridge?

    Thanks

My inkjet uses an ink pump and pumps ink until the pressure drops to a negative level, meaning there's not a single drop of ink left in the ink bag in the cartridge.

I'm used to this 100% efficiency that certain HP business printers achieve using this ink pump system. So to see this Canon laser printer has only 50% efficiency as in it says it's low when there's about 75% of the toner left, then says it's empty when there's 50% of the toner left, and you need to open the door every 100 pages or so to use up the remaining 50%. This is completely ridiculous, and there's no risk of "running dry" like with inkjet which is why poorly designed inkjets simply have no choice but to disable the cartridge before it's truly empty, but there's no risk of damage from running out of toner on a laser printer as far as I know.

        You would be incorrect.

Nice story, but no, you're absolutely wrong!

I knew it was only a matter of time before he came back and got on his inkjet kick again. Like I said in the last thread, he must have gotten out of jail early. For those of you that don't know him, don't reply with a solution because he doesn't really want one. He's here to have fun and we're having fun right along with him. We need a new forum just for him. Hey admin, how about an aab1 forum.

                    No rep power, either.

                    Tells you something, doesn't it?

Gee, I wonder what would happen if you ran a newer car out of gas? In the old days, you would simply put some in the tank, possibly prime the carburetor, and off you went.

Today's cars would most likely require a new computer and another $1,000 worth of shop time to set it up.

Depending on your machine/model you will be shorting the life of the drum unit or print head.
The machine is asking for toner/ink for a reason!
This is a small cheap machine with "all in one" cartridges that contain everything, so I don't care about shortening the life of the drum because I get a new drum and everything else in each of the 4 cartridges. I also refill them and get 2-3 refills before quality degrades and then I need a new cartridge, but I get the compatible HP ones for $150, I never have and never will buy the $700 Canon cartridges (I bought the machine knowing I would never buy Canon cartridges).

$700 for 2800 prints at 5% is nothing short of theft. With HP inkjets making 2800 prints at 16 times the print quality would cost about $100, comparing genuine cartridges in both cases (using bulk ink like I do, 2800 prints costs me $15 VS $700 for the same thing using the Canon laser printer).

And thanks for letting me know that running dry is bad for lasers too, I had been told the opposite from another source. As I've said I'm new to this much inferior laser technology and use inkjet 99% of the time.
