    I'm guessing

Since it is an image class its like getting count from a fax machine , in a way.
go into service mode. I'm guessing again, additional functions then #. scroll down using up and down arrows to see if you see count anywhere. If count is not on that area scroll down to printer, then go into that section the printer section and scroll down again. It must be there. don't tell me it's a little button on the panel that says counter check, that would mess up my theory.
I don't know for sure, but thats where i would check if i was in front of the machine,in the service mode section. good luck
Oh no question is too dumb. Some of the smallest and easiest things to know is the ones that baffle all of us at times. Maybe next time you will be answering my question.

      Total count/canon mf 6550

Thanks for help ,but that did not do the trick. I spoke to Canon and they told me there was NO meter counting copies on machine. I asked if I can get it thru some Sim mode, and they said no. I dont believe them, they would not let me speak to tech.I cant believe in this the 21 century, that they have digital machine that dosnt record count somewhere.I told them customer was complaining about yield on cartridges and they told me to tell customer to change cartridge and start counting each ream of paper that is used with cartridge. This is fairly large office using machine as printer only and that idea would be BIG inconvenience. This is the year 2008,is it not?

        meter read

I'll look into it further unless someone else has an answer. Maybe they are right and there is no counter. I will know in a couple of days if not sooner. I will reply as soon as I get an answer.

Been a bit of time, but as I remember from class - counters are only in business grade systems and I do not think (or at least not very often ;-) Canon lists the MF series as business class.

I understand your frustration and we have to deal with people that buy these throw-away type systems because (whatever the reason) they do not want to pay (in the short run) for business grade. End up (long run) paying a lot more and searching for anyone that will work on them. Not to mention the per copy costs are significantly higher.

Yourownfree may have a possible solution (via one of the options in service mode) but I suspect not. Canon could have put it kinder, but the only way may be to track paper usage.

Canon owns the football and not trying to defend them BUT Canon's tech support policy as I understand it is they will only assist someone certified to repair on a given machine - and (I think again) working for a registered dealer. Whenever I call them they (automated system) want my tech number, then what machine, and then (if I am "certified" for that machine) pass me to support. If I am not certified for that specific machine - it says "you are not certified for that system" and hangs up.

Like I said, it is their ball.

You should be able to read the page totals by printing out a System Dump report from service mode.

However, there is no counter pcb and the report totals can easily be reset by performing a 'Service' clear.

It is typical on the Office Max versions of the Canon desktop copiers for there to be no counter whatsoever. Any electronic counters zero out the moment the machine is turned off or unplugged. The only hope you have is recovering the drum count if this particular Canon has a chip on the drum unit counting copies. I don't know how you would recover this count, regardless....
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I just checked the manual, and in fact there is a counter display in service mode.

To enter service mode: Press Additional Functions, 2, 8, Additional Functions

Scroll through the menu using the arrow keys until you find 'COUNTER'. Alternatively, once you're in service mode, print the System Data list from the 'REPORT' menu.

Yes, the information is in the service manual. Nothing in the User manuals about counters though.

Good info. I looked at a picture of the MF6550 and it looks quite a bit like the iR1023 (maybe the consumer grade version?). If so, you may want to go to imagerunner.com and download info guides for the 1023 as it should (with the cartridge exception) be the same.

These machines are the same as the ir1023 except for the cartridge and the cost of running them. Also the service from our shop is higher, 135.00 per hour versus 99.50. Go buy another one from office max.
