1. Clean the tray home position sensor (P18) or replace it .
2. Check the tray lift mechanism.
3. check the finisher controller PCB
4. Check wiring from the finisher controller PCB to the lift motor.
5. replace lift motor (M5)

Just a question. When you swich on the machine what happens. Does the trays try to move (find home position) or does the machine give you E 540 straight away ??

A defective MS2 / MS6 can cause E540 codes. Inspect and make sure MS2 / MS6 are actuating properly. The part number for MS2 / MS6 is FF3-4021-000.
