make sure your board is version 10 or higher. That will help the finisher a lot.
n E540-8001 indicates that the
stack tray has been driven, but the paper surface is not detected. In
this case, it has been found that the Lever (4A3-1104-000) is Damaged. The lever was replaced, to resolve the issue.

Check your controller for a blown fuse ...FU3
FU3 supply's 24 volts DC to M1, the stack tray shift motor. When this fuse blows it will give an E540-8001
code and the tray will not move at all. The Finisher service manual
shows M6 as the stack tray shift motor but it is actually M1.
Also at the bottom of the tray travel there is a sensor. That flag was upgraded to help keep light out. Maybe related or not. But the big one is the motor. Also take off the back cover of the finisher and check the cable harness. make sure it has not rubbed a hole in the wires.
