[CQ] Profiling Paper on the Image Runner C5180

I have the Image Runner 5180 hooked up with an H1 print server. I would like to profile several papers, as I am not getting anywhere near satisfactory colors when I move away from plain paper.

My (possibly incorrect) understanding is that:
    • I can technically create a profile using the scanner as a spectrometer. This would be good enough for me.
    • there are two ways to create a profile with the scanner;
      1. using the built-in tools at the machine
      2. using color tools in the EFI Command Workstation

    • There are three ways to apply a profile
      1. Within the print program (i.e. photoshop)
      2. with Command Workstation
      3. with the printer driver configuration

Please correct me if I am wrong on any one of these points.

I have dabbled with the CWS profiling app but I never set out trying to actually profile papers. I also have my doubts as to how well it will work, given some past experiences with broken CWS functionality. I don't know where to find the calibration tools at the machine. Can someone direct me to a guide on how to create profiles, how to add them to the printer/ distribute them to the multiple users, and how to apply them without double-profiling. Also, does Command Workstation have anything to do with the media types specified in the driver?

I do have some experience with profiling papers for my wide format inkjet printer.

I need to print from Mac and Windows machines.

    Thanks

If you are talking about ICC profiles - than I guess your H1 is not capable of doing that, unless you have some more options activated.

Generally speaking for creating a profile that fits a specific media you need a software (like X-Rite) and hardware (Like eye-One).

Than you print some patches and read those patches and the software will make the calculations for creating the color curves.

On large format printing the RIP (software) makes the calculations and does this curves adjustment for you.

On small format printing like (A4, A3) the adjustments are done within the (your case H1).

I tried to do what you are trying to do but I had no success. I believe you need a more expensive RIP for that.

I believe you are correct that it is not possible to create ICC profiles without additional software and hardware. I had confused this with paper calibration or "Gradation Adjustment" as Canon calls it.

        U need to buy a x-rite Spectrometer\

In reality- u need to buy an imagePress model for better media profile storage
