    Canon PC795 shuts off randomly

I am working on a PC795. You turn the unit on, press the START button and it will sometimes shut off immediately. Other times it will feed the paper to the first stage and shut off. Other times it will be in the middle of making a copy and shuts off.

Then you can make 10 or 20 copies and it works just fine, push start to do a single and it again shuts off.

And I mean shuts off, just like somebody pushed the power switch. You can turn it right back on again by pushing the power button.

I suspect the power supply is failing when it gets loaded but figured I'd throw it out there in case there are any other techs that might know where to go digging.

And yes, I know, this is a disposable copier and should be "dumpster bait" but it belongs to a summer camp that operates on a shoestring and a prayer and if I can get it going again for them, they would be very happy.

It's a common problem on this series of machines. It's one of three choices.

    1) The On/Off button hinge is broken, or the there is dirt under the edge of the button holding it down.

    2) Cold solder joints on the On/Off push switch.

    3) Worn out push switch. (Does not close to 0 ohms)

Once you have the operation panel dis-assembled, you can rule out #1 & #2. Use a VOM to rule out #3. This is a very common sized switch. It isn't hard to find a replacement.

Oh, there's a fourth. The fuse may be blown on the composite power supply. You can replace the fuse, but it probably won't help. In this case it needs a composite power supply. In this case, find a dumpster for this thing.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

The button on this copier does not stay down to turn it on. It is a momentary switch. When pushed, a relay energizes on the main board to keep the machine on. For some reason the relay is dropping out when the machine starts the copy cycle. I checked for bad connections and didn't find any. Figure there must be a bad regulator or control IC.

Yes, they're all momentary switches. A bad switch can still cause this problem.
