Client has an imagerunner advanced C5045 that over the weekend started making a loud noise from rear of machine and making blank pages on black. Is this a dead black laser unit?
Check the little plastic "prop" on the rear of the dev...the one that drives the dev cylinder. They strip inside. Actually there is a mod for this......

That doesn't cause a loud noise at rear of machine that OP mentioned.
I toured apart drum and developer look of look fine I don't see any strip gears. In service mode I can print out yellow blue and magenta just no black. The loud sound comes from what looks like a motor down below the drum units, is this possibly a laser drive?

I have had the coupling at the rear break a piece off. It is spring loaded and yes, it makes a noise. More of a soft thumping. Just supplying some info. Thought it included this in it....this one makes noise
Ck main drive assy. Is the coupler on the drive assy that locks into the developer assy? Kinda hard to see bit if u remove drum tray u can look back there. Also reach back there and turn by hand each of the couplers and u will probably feel a difference in the black drive coupler. U need to replace main drive assy.
