Now i have the answer.

To find out which SSD is installed without opening the device you need to check
which Storage Controller Firmware version is installed in Service mode
AA2J0Y0-6505-G00-07: Phison 96-layer
AA2J0Y0-6501-G01-08: Phison 64-layer
AA2J0Y0-6501-G01-07: Phison 64-layer
AA2J0Y0-6502-G01-02: Tohshiba
AA2J0Y0-6503-G01-02: KIOXIA 96-layer

I need to replace the storage board on a C250i. Is there any way to identify which type of storage board I have? The part # isn't the most recent: AA2JM72M00.

That's a good question.It depends on whether you can still get into service mode. Or the label on the storage board.
In my case it was a toshiba SSD that was causing the problem.

The part Nr of the new ordered storage board was AA2JM72702 (26.08.2021)


This failure could mean that not only the Phison storage boards cause problems but also the Toshiba storage boards. And we have only a storage firmware Update for Phison SSD.
I have many devices with Toshiba AA2J0Y0-6502-G01-02 storage boards and I hope there are no more cases.

I guess my real question is, if I don't know if my new storage board is the 96-layer or not, does it matter if I load the new boot rom with an older style board? Is the new boot program meant ONLY for the new boards, or is it backward compatible?

You can upgrade to the new boot program even if the Phison 96-layer isn't installed.

I found that by formatting the ssd in the computer, sometimes recovering it. It's worth a try considering the price.

Kind of a dumb question, but considering how much trouble I've had when replacing these storage boards, I'll ask anyway: are there any extra steps needed when the machine has Bizhub Secure installed?

If we need to order a new storage board from now on we will probably get the 96 layer.
We upgrade the boot program on all new installations just as precaution.

OK, here's a question: I've had issues when replacing the storage board, where the MFP firmware won't load. This has happened several times since these machines came out. The MFP firmware fails at 70%. Partitioning the drive doesn't help. Usually the only thing that helps is using the reset tool to wipe the CPU board, and losing all settings and meters. Has anybody seen this, and what causes it?

Hi guys...

I was the original poster of this thread and didn't even realise that it went live or that i got replies.
I've been scrolling through these threads refreshing my memory on what i last done as I've just got a 360i in my workshop with the dreaded 25% boot issue. stumbled across this thread only to find it was my post. (insert face palm emoji here)

I know tsbservice is going to have a field day with me for reviving a dead thread LOL but i thought I owe you guys the outcome.

The original issue was resolved by replacing the storage board. (which we all know by now is the cure)
Replaced with an aftermarket "off the shelf" ssd which matched the faulty one. Popped it into a m.2 nvme adaptor and formatted prior to fitting into device running B6 f/w and upping f/w accordingly. Device has been running perfectly since.

My new issue is the 360i I'm currently tackling which starts up and hangs 25% and that's that. Stays there for hours.
Can't run selfdiagnostics, can't run trouble shoot reset to access SM through backend, can't run F/W. Disconnected all peripherals no go, ran F/W without storage board installed, same just stuck on 25%.
I'm not sure what the current F/W is. Only thing out of the ordinary on client side is that they lost power to device overnight and when they got to office the next morning they noticed it wasn't booting.

I've pulled the storage board and whacked it into adaptor, it's currently running the format.

I'll keep you posted with the outcome if that's cool with you guys.

Good look, I wasn't able to recover a faulty nvme yet by formating it via adapter. The MFPs also refuse to accept another nvme from a different machine - somehow they become "married". Didn't try to use a brand new "non-KM" one since I doubt this will work like the good old times.
