Does it serve any purpose? Thinking of removing it as its come loose and causing jams...

I'm not sure about its function nor importance. Did not find any disadvantages when ripped off. However, since I am a pathological pedantic person (according to my daughter ) I made from old platen covers (the white ones with foam on its back) replacement strips and mounted them with double-sided sticky tape. The size of the part should be 250 × 12 × 3.2 mm. Doing this since two years and until now no drawbacks and my “sorrows” are over........😁

Take care that they have the same size and are mounted exactly on the same spot, otherwise the moveable guides on the right side of it (DF-617) can become blocked.

                  I'd have done the same.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                  1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                  2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                  3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                  4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                  5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
