Did this just spontaneously appear for the customer, or during/after a service call?

      board replacement

had to replace the main board.. I took it off a 7272. I kept the original NVRAM. I found that 56-04 is a serial number issue, but I did the procedure to reset the serial number and it had no change

That board has 7272 firmware on it. As far as I know, the FW cannot be overwritten. IOW, useless to a 7255. Sorry.

          56-03

CAUSE: There is no firmware installed on a new Printer Control Board.

SOLUTION: Flash the machine with the latest

If it was in a 7272, wouldn't there be FW, just the wrong type? I know that 7165/55 boards cannot be swapped once written.

The list of differences shows control board exclusively for each machine because of CPM.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

Have changed a 7155 control board to a 65 once a while ago. The key was to start an isw and interrupt the download as soon as the graph shows the download in progress. then reflash with the firmware you want the board to become. Sorry, but I cannot remember if it was the Image or Control firmware.

the ISW wont even start.. just flashes a "connecting" message. the machine shows an error 41

That error is for flashing a board w/ the wrong, different firmware. That confirms my earlier assumption.
