    Hard Drive Replacement

Late yesterday I responded to a call for C0640 Hard Disk Error. I have ordered 2 HDD and will be replacing them as soon as they come in. I attempted to do a U917 (Setting backup data reading/writing) so that I could import it after hard drive replacement but it failed. So I will re-enter the info after replacing the hard drives.

Since this is my first hard drive replacement on a Kyocera I thought I would ask if anyone had any tips they learned when replacing Hard drives on the Kyoceras. I know that I need to do a U024 (HDD formatting) and I,m assuming I select "Full" versus "Data". From here I'm not sure of anything else that has to be done. I will go ahead and do a firmware update just because. I will also do U917 and store it for future need. I actually plan on doing the U917 for all machines with HDDs.

    Anything I missed?

    Re: Hard Drive Replacement

Surprisingly there is no firmware on the HDD. When you install functional HDDs it will resume function immediately. You will lose address book, IP, SMTP, and any job account IDs. Having that U917 backup is handy ... and rare. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I couldn't tell from your post, but are you aware that comparable off the self HDD's will work. The cost savings are substantial.

Thanks blackcat. That is good to know. The tech support rep I spoke with yesterday was service manager prior to where he is now. He said his techs backup their equipment and gave it to the customer and told them to keep it in case something happened. We are a small company so I don't have a lot of Kyoceras in the field right now. I am in position to do backups and I will store them myself just in case I need them later. The good thing is they only print and copy as well as use Pinpoint for scanning. I'm pretty sure I will need to load Pinpoint back onto the copier but am not quite sure.

Thanks Geo. Your right. I spoke with another tech at a dealership that we service a machine for in our area. They buy their HDDs from Micro Center versus Kyocera. I looked up the part on Kyoceras site and they are pushing 500.00. WOW! All it is are 2 160G 5400RPM hard drives and the housing. By the way, I asked tech support and they said I have to purchase theirs. As my buddy used to say, Ain't going to happen Captain.

Has anyone attempted to fix the HDDs themselves? I'm willing to bet that most HDD failures on Kyocera boxes are logic errors.

You may be right. I work on PCs for myself and most (not all) HDDs last at least 5 years if not more. I had a WD hard drive that went 8 years before making scratching noise but still worked. In my case I plan on taking the HDDs I remove and formatting them to see what happens. I'll do it at home to see. Will post results later.

If you hook the hdd up to an external cable and look at the partitions with disk manager in windows, you can delete those partitions, format and put it back into the copier. I believe there are like 7 partitions on them. I've seen this work in the past.

                  Re: Hard Drive Replacement

We were suppose to receive 2 HDDs today but the company we ordered them from decided not to ship them like they said they would. I decided to take a HDD from a laptop I have that is not worth repairing and try it. I wiped the drive and installed it which solved my issue. I later hooked the bad HDD to my computer and it will not recognize the HDD. Seems its toast. I do agree with what tedtech said. In most cases I believe if you delete all partitions and format to resolve the issue. For the one I used from the laptop, I used MiniTool Partition Wizard (Free Version) to delete the partitions. The drive will then only have 1 partition and will be allocated. You can then use it. I now have the original 160G Hdd and the 250G Hdd from my broken laptop and the machine is functioning well. Thanks everyone for your support on this. Hopefully others will see this thread and make things easier for them when they run across this issue.
