Ok, I know this guy is ancient, but the school has no money to replace it so we try to limp it along. Works fine printing, off the glass is great, but through the ADF we are washing out about an inch of print. Not completely gone, but very very washed out. Cleaning all the optics and slit glass with same result. Any ideas?

I believe you cleaned the optics, but yes, try again. This was a common issue due to plastic fumes from fuser area.Comment

If okay off the glass optics are probably fine, the slit glass on those machines always caused this issue. Even when you think it's clean, try maybe a bit of glass cleaner and dry cloth. Especially on the under side of the slit glass.Comment

And get some tape to cover the cutout left of the scanner home position. It'll help mitigate buildup.Comment

Agree with all the others who have said clean the glass and the optics. This is the only model series that I break a cardinal rule of not using windex [glass cleaner] on the mirrors. I had one just last week where cleaning the mirrors and and optics improved the quality, but still had light copy in the middle. Cleaned all mirrors, lens and ccd a second time with a glass cleaner and guess what, perfect copies! Do not forget to clean the underside of the slit glass as well as the out-gassing from the plastic parts can cloud the glass underneath.Comment

I have found on the older "mirror" scanners try using RAIN-X on the mirrors and underside of slit glass... keeps the build up from coming back too quick.Comment
