We have been battling this intermittent code for a while. We have replaced the Motor. The solenoid seems fine. I have not actually seen the machine produce the code. About once a week the customer calls in with the code. Has anyone seen this issue?

belt sensor? clean or replace it. undo all the J connectors from the main adf pwb and remake them as well as to the base machine. that don't help I would try another adf main pwb -

Re: C8040 on a 420I with a DF-780B
Did you replace the belt sensor or just clean it? Replace the sensor, if that does not cure the problem go for the solenoid. Had one of these finishers a month ago throwing a C8140 code for some time. Had replaced all the sensors only to discover that the code can also be thrown by the paper hold down [not in the manual]. The solenoid operated manually appeared to work correctly and would operate when run in the Sim mode check, but apparently it would not activate in normal operation on occasion creating the failure code. After changing the solenoid we have not heard from the user again.Comment

Re: C8040 on a 420I with a DF-780B
The one I worked on recently had coded out the day before to C8040. The customer re-booted the machine and it isolated the finisher. When I examined it, the first thing that I noticed was that the paper conveying motor was flaming hot. I could have cooked steaks on it ... 24 hours after it was isolated. My conclusion was that the finisher controller was sending fairly random pulses ... not the right sequence or rhythm to make the motor turn, but it buzzed and kept it plenty hot.
I replaced the PCM and the finisher controller together, then re-loaded the firmware. It has not re-occurred. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
