    CS1620 paper jams after changing drum unit

    I changed the drum unit, and everything seemed to go fine. But now I hear gears grinding when I try to make a copy and the paper accordions right by the drum. All of the gears seem to mesh correctly.

    Now that I think of it--maybe the gear at the rear of the machine that drives the drum is stuck in or something??

    If you've seen this before, please help.

      Did you try reinstalling the old one to elliminate the possibililty of a defective drum unit? I've never had one bad on those older mid size kyocera's, but anything is possible. I've noticed they sometimes don't always seat well when installing, but usually once it starts turning it seats itself just fine. Try turning the drum by hand to make sure it's not bound up.

          On drum units of this era the drum drive couplers tend to get gummy and stick in a specific position. You can lubricate the drum drive coupler with oil then work it in/out several times to determine if the spring loading is working. =^..^=
          If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

              When you removed the tape and cardboard cover over the drive coupling, did all the cardboard come out? Had one a couple of years ago where the drum unit in shipping had been mishandled and wound up having some of the cardboard covering imbeded in the drive coupling resulting in the drum not turning and causing a paper jam. As suggested in a previous post, put the old drum back in and see if it still jams. Otherwise you may have a bad drum unit that is bound up.

                  The gears on the machine side are supposed to spring out... this didn't. I can't understand why--I mean no one took it apart or anything. But there was absolutely no pressure pushing the drum gear out, so that it engages the drum. Anyway, as I was fiddling with it, another part broke. Then a piece of the toner ctg broke. And then I found a little plastic bushing that didn't seem to go anywhere. I'm about done with this thing. I'm going to push for a new machine.
