[Misc] Kyocera KM2560 Sponge under laser unit, rotting...

What is the purpose of the sponge mounted at an angle under the Print Laser unit?

Item #53 P/N 302H002371 Description: SHIELD LSU LOW

Of course after all these years it is dry-rotting/turning to goo....making a mess.

I thought it might be to dampen vibration from the hexagonal motor in the laser unit. Or to capture the laser reflecting back off of the photo receptor drum?

Is a replacement necessary? I doubt that I could even find this part anywhere.

Adhesive backed foam of the same dimensions would be acceptable?

    Thanks

better to replace it with another similar sponge provided it has the same dimensions (I think the one for insulating the windows is fine) but make sure that it sticks well. The utility is anti-vibration, anti-dust, insulating. Bye

Thank You, that is what I suspected. Blocking the reflected laser beam off of the photo-receptor was a stretch I know. Oddly, there is what appears to be rectangular line stamped into the sheet metal showing how the foam should be positioned. The foam is in a slightly different place which may be a revised re-positioning.

It does indeed seem to block toner from migrating back towards LSU assembly.

      Thank You Again
