    Kyocera 3551: Jam 0000 18

When I arrived the display showed Jam code 0000 and position code 18. I was unable to find a paper jam in the machine.

Jam code 0000 indicates that the machine was powered on when a sensor in the conveying section is turned on. I'm unsure what location position code 18 refers to?

Another thing is that I cannot enter service mode. The machine shows that a fax is in memory and it will not clear. Maybe that has something to do with not being able to get in service mode?

Yes. The fax in memory will prevent you from going into service mode. Remove the fax and memory and you should be able to get in.

Thank you. That will get me to where I can check U031. That should tell me which sensor is on.

After removing the fax board to clear the incoming fax, I was able to enter service mode. From there I checked U031 and found "exit paper" sensor was on. I found the actuator for that sensor was in a bind and corrected that. I'm guessing the customer haphazardly removed the jam and that caused the problem??!!

When I printed out the jam log, it showed the last 10 or so jams were J1301 - rebuilt feed head at tray 1 to correct.

Another thing to watch for on Alphards is the rear cassette guide in the paper tray(s). If the customer breaks the small plastic tab that holds the rear cassette guide down, the paper size with will be incorrectly identified as STMT-R rather than LTR. A tech that didn't catch the cassette guide issue might hard set the paper size for that tray to LTR.

Then no faxes will print to that tray, starting you down that road you just followed. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
              1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
              2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
              3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
              4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
              5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Show me where in ANY Kyocera service manual it states that if a fax is in memory it will keep you from performing a service function. It is only learned through experience! BTW, what does BSM2 stand for? Bullshit Master?

That's interesting and I will make a note of this for future use. I didn't notice any irregularities with any of the paper trays.

I'm curious if the fax board needs to be removed on all Kyoceras in order to clear an incoming fax? That seems an odd way to accomplish this. Almost like it's a design flaw.

The only way i found to clear a fax job is to pull the fax pwb. Also on the btoken tray guide. I just drill a small hole in the tray frame and screw it down with the flat tray lock screws that came with the 1 series copiers.

Oh ... you can do a U021, which will clear the fax job, but that's the only other way. Fax jobs cannot be removed so easily. Print and copy jobs can be easily deleted, but not fax jobs. I credit it to the Panasonic manufactured fax boards.

You may have noticed that the fax job returned when you reinstalled the fax board, and printed.

I had a similar issue on a Stratos (CS-2560). The machine was unable to proceed past a fax job in the queue for an unknown (still unknown) reason. On this occasion I did the U021, and had to restore quite a lot of network setup, including fax forwarding. When it occurred again a year later I pulled the fax board, and ran U906. When I reinstall the fax board, the job printed.

It's just another quirk of Kyoceras. =^..^=
