Is this something that can only be performed by a dealer? If not could you tell me how? Thanks!

What model machine are you talking about? And yes, the firmware files are only available to a dealer. It is best to have a dealer perform the firmware upgrade, because after the upgrade there may be adjustments that are needed for your machine.(depending on the model)My mission here on Earth is to help all you Dum-Dums! -
Firmware updates
I have been working on copiers since 1984 however the man who I worked for never got into the digital copiers heavy. So I'm having to learn as I go. Him losing the Mita dealership in 1996 does not help much. So I'm just trying to get a heads up as I try to get back into Mita copiers. Thanks!Comment

Kyocera put out new firmware updates for the newer machines every month or so. Especially for the new TASKalfas, they recommend to update firmware at every service call. However, some firmware updates can cause more harm than good, i.e. the recent 6030/8030 one tha caused the C-4200 code to pop up. The Service Manual for each machine tell you what to use and how to update the firmware. But you know the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."Comment

Here's the thing: There's always the chance that one of your EEPROMs will not flash properly, or the power is interrupted beyond your control, leaving you with a dead machine-a doorstop.
The good news is that this doesn't happen nearly as often as it used to. I've killed a half dozen Sharp machines, and 3 Copystar machines while flashing firmware. As a safety measure most manufacturers recommend that you carry a full set of spare EEPROMs. Honestly, I have never had a complete set of spare EEPROMs for any one model.
Copystar/Kyocera has made it much easier than Sharp to flash. You should still read the procedure in the manual. The specialized knowledge comes in when you're preparing the compact flash cards. Once the card is ready, the rest is a breeze.
Finally, I always test the new firmware on a machine that I can keep an eye on (preferably in the office). We had a few bad versions of Harrier firmware (360 & 362) that gave laser codes. The latest version 2-9-9 seems to have conquered the laser codes problem. For this reason, I always hold onto the old versions of the firmware. Once the new version is posted, you won't be able to get the old versions again. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
