FS1118MFP J11 Problem

I hope somebody can help me with this. I have hundreds of the FS1118MFP in the field, and a lot of them constantly come up with J11 jams. On some of them the J11 jam count is on 999 (it can't go any higher) and the machine is only on 20,000 or 30,000 copies.

When copying, it just picks up the page and stops not even close to registration. We've tried everything from changing the pickup roller, cassette, spring clutches... no luck... give it a week or two and the problem is back.

Once I even took a machine back to the office, and put the same reem of paper through it 6 times without a single jam. Took it back to my customer, and the very first copy jammed. I was lucky to walk out alive.

I've spoken to some Olivetti, and Triumph Adler techs and they say they dont have that problem. I proved them wrong by printing out the event log on some of their own machines. They have no clue either...

Please please please can somebody shed some light on this for me

In the tray, remove the pressure springs and stretch them slightly. These machines (including the fs1020, 1030, km1815 and km1820) all have this problem. I have found that this usually solves the problem for a long while.

Yep, stretch the springs. Remember that you can watch the pickup tire from the back of the machine. That will tell you if it's the clutch/feed system or just a slippery tire thanks to the springs.

My regional Kyocera tech rep has very few other dealers that work with the KM-1820 (aka FS-1118mfp), so I've been frustrated when most of our machines have the same problem, yet nobody else has seen the problem.

Other 1820/1118 workarounds:
Needing a crowbar to open the cassette - Put some grease on a couple points in the cassette, mainly on the "lock cassette" parts.
Optic block jitters when returning from a platen copy - Clean and lube the optic shaft, mainly around the letter/a4 point.
I've seen some customers put a bent post-it note at the end of the exit tray to stop papers from falling off, but I'm not convinced it works that well.

Thanks guys for the replies. Also for the additional info, even though i've sorted those problems out before. I'll try the spring stretch method. Allow me to share some of my experiences as well.

1) Copies from the platen are perfect, from the DP100 its pitch black, corner to corner. Replace the flat ribbon cable running from the optics to the scanner PCB - sometimes works for c3200 code as well.

2) Blank copies and internal prints. I'm not sure what the exact cause of this is, but every single time that i've had this problem, stripping the machine down and making sure that all the silver contact plates make proper contact, at times even bending them to make extra contact worked like a charm.

3) Excessive screeching noise - empty waste toner tank and split it from the dev unit, remove the drum, cleaning blade, and seal, inside is an oval shaped roller... bit of a biatch to remove, but once its out, clean the hardened toner from the ends, as well as inside the bushings.

4) machine works fine for hours on end and without reason switches completely off as if somebody pulled the power cord - try the engine PCB instead of the power supply

While we're on the topic... Have any of you guys had the problem where the machine gives you C3100. We have that a lot here in sunny South Africa, again we've tried a lot of things but so far replacing the entire scanner assembly seems to be the only hope. I think this may be a CCD fault.

Other than the above - Awesome machine. Best seller my company has ever had, and we supply and service just about anything that goes inside an office.

have you tried just cleaning the feed tyre i get this a lot on olivetti 18mf this seems to work just clean the feed tyre with foam or replace the feed tyre .

Thanks for that Friend, but i hate to burst your bubble, but this modified spring does not work. The FS1118 is one of the best sellers that we ever had, so we have hundreds of them if not thousands, of which a lot have the j11 Problem. We've been ordering and replacing these springs for a long time, and let me tell you, you have a 50/50 chance of it working. Depending on the volume the users do. For those who get the new type spring and do low volumes this works beautifully. For those who do larger volumes this improves the problem but never really solves it. What we also do is take the rubber off the pickup roller and turn it around so that the ribs on the rubber turn against the pickup direction instead of with it. This, in combination with the new spring helps a lot, but again never really fixes it.

Bear me out and just try this...Bend the little metal stopper that stop the reg. actuator lower and closer to the reg clutch so that it barely clears the teeth of the reg. clutch.. Fixed 2 this past summer...let me know
