Fax tip needed

Fax tip needed I have a customer with a copystar 2550 copier/fax machine.

Now she has 2 lines. One line is strictly office telephone, the other line is a roll over if line one is busy.

Her fax line is the line 2, problem is when it rolls over to line 2 they pick up the line and disconnects the fax handshake.

I have searched the book high and low and could not resolve the issue.

1) I know she needs a dedicated line but she is not buying another line.

2) I know about distinctive ring tone (DRT) but her phone company says its not available.


I need some smart creative tech that's a wizard with phone networks to give me advice here.


How can she continue to use line 2 as a rollover line and yet use the fax machine.

How about if she makes Line 1 the fax line/office line and Line 2 the office line. This way she can still use Line 1 for incoming calls. But use Line 2 for outgoing calls. So if theoretically someone calls line 1, she can answer line 1. However if someone calls line 1 and it's busy sending or receiving a fax then the incoming call will rollover to the unused line 2. The only thing that could be a problem is if line 1 is in use for talking and a fax comes in. What'll happen since only line 1 is plugged into the fax? I'm sure they have devices out there that'll convert say a 1 line phone into a 2 line phone and if one number is in use then it'll switch to the other one. You could plug that into the fax machine.

She wont buy it, she is blaming me lol and she threw out the box,manuals and software lol?????????

I bought a fax switch and will try that because I am done with anymore ideas.

Ok. If I'm understanding this correctly, when the fax is operating on line2, and the incoming voicecall jumps to line2, it interrupts the transmission. Is there a way to turn off the "call waiting/interrupt" feature on line2 so at worst the incoming voicecall gets a busy signal? Just a thought.

if I did that then they mine as well use line 2 as just a dedicated fax line, which they do not want to do.

But wouldn't it only do that if the fax was in use, and would still jump if the fax was not in use? It sounds as though if the fax is in use on line2 and a second call comes in on line2 [or from line1], it still rings in?(call waiting) What happens if a 3rd call comes in when both lines are in use?

....I think she may just plain be asking for too much from the phone system she has, but hope the switch works for ya.

Hi, Phil,

Please make your customer aware that NO fax manufacturer will stand behind any solution other than a dedicated fax line.

She needs to understand that she is asking for something that no "worth while" dealer can or will support.

If she wants to explore the various switches on the market (and there are quite a few) she is welcome to do so, but it would be at her own risk, and on her own time.

You're like almost everyone on this forum, Phil - myself included.

It's just in our nature as service oriented technical people to want to "make stuff work", even when faced with impossible odds. We feel as though we have somehow failed when the lead doesn't turn into gold. Lord knows, I've tried.

I'm just so leery of suggesting a third party solution, even when I know it will work. If it doesn't, for whatever goofy reason, we're left holding the proverbial bag.

A few months ago I got roped by middle management into installing a wireless repeater at a "difficult" customer because the wireless card in our MFP wasn't sensitive enough. It was a piece of cake installation, but I'm just waiting for the day (probably in a year or two) when it goes belly up. That oughta be fun.

actually there is a solution.

set the mfp to manual reception of fax. she will have to manually start the incoming fax when she hears the tone. i've set them up (one...lol) and it works.

Have her buy a CHeap Switch, I seem to remember seeing some line switch that would detect if it was a MODEM/FAX calling or a VOICE call, it then would route the call to the proper port.... Normally around 20 bucks, cheap enough, worth a try

Sounds like she's going to have to put it in manual mode and hit the start key when she hears the fax tone.
