Kyocera Mita Copystar 1810, J98 error, (laser)

I've got two Copystar 1810 copiers that I bought off lease and they came in with toner and developer all over. I cleaned them up but now they feed paper, go through the motions of making a copy once, and then code J98 comes up. It says BD laser error! I took one laser apart to check, (carefully). Seems OK, no dirt inside. What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Rigger

Are you sure of the code you're getting? The highest jam code that machine would display is J73 which is in the ADF area. As far as the LSU goes, a jam code would indicate a bad laser unit. The machine would make a loud humming noise even more than usual along with an A4000 code. My question is are you sure of the jam code and where are you getting a laser error from?

I have continually gotten J98 code. The Intravia manual says "BD LASER" problem, not paper jam. ???

Okay, my mistake. That code does not appear in the Service Manual, however it is referenced in the Instruction Handbook. Strange. Anyway, most likely it looks like it's in the same group as the infamous J00 code. There's probably a time piece of paper or something blocking a sensor or pressing down on an actuator or something. Either way, this wouldn't have anything to do with the LSU. I'll check the Intravia guide myself tomorrow and see that reference.

i believe i recall seeing that problem once or twice and if i remember correctly, it was the main charger shorting out and causing this erroneous code. you may want to check that out, especially since it came in dirty.

check the main charging metal casing or the whole main charger assembly.align the metal casing of the main charger or replace the wire.if symptoms persist check the registration switch you might need to solder the components inside the tiny switch
