CS-5050 Scans either terrible in lower res, or WAY to big on 300 DPI

Is there a firmware update to allow a smaller size save on a PDF on a CS-5050?

When I scan in a lower res, I get an unreadable document essentially. When I change to a 300 dpi setting, I get a 3.8MB PDF file on 4 pages!!!

Why on earth is this machine creating such a large file, and why do I need to make the settings as such just to read a scan?

Please advise, as my 350.00 scansnap makes better quality images at 1/4 the file size.

    Thanks so much in advance.

You're probably making color scans. Select Monochrome, then see what your file size is. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

      Nope..

Tried Monochrome, text, text/photo/ black white.

Makes no difference, they are huge. Scanning a 120 page pdf turns out to be (on 300 dpi-monochrome) about 24 mb. Obviously, this makes me use other means to break it down, then email it out.
      Thanks for any other tips.

I have a customer with a Saturn that we did some experimenting to get the best image quality size versus file size. Our settings included Monochrome, Text, 300x300, density +1.
I don't know why, but scans-to-email produced ~10% smaller file than the exact same settings to a SMB folder. Personally I would have thought that both would be identical.

I can't imagine why your file size is so large, unless you've got color, OCR, & 600x600 enabled. =^..^=

I just tested a 4 page legal size scan. Using your settings, (but changed density to +1) I got 317kb
          Why oh why.

Going to test a big scan next, and check quality. Big thanks for the settings breakdown!!! Also, I am only using SMB-
Will report back on a big scan. Thanks again.

Depending on your image fill and background color, you should be seeing, on average, 16.57bits/cm2 or 10Kb letter or 13Kb legal, based on Monochrome, Text, 300x300, density +1. If your pages have very small dense text, or a shaded background, your file size can increase dramatically. Selecting Color scans increases file size by a factor of 10. =^..^=
