This is caused by the lower gate in the stapling tray. A small plastic post is snapped off, most likely with the assistance of an enduser. The post is actuated by a solenoid to open the gate when 8 1/2" long paper is fed into the stapling tray. I didn't think of snapping a "before" picture of the broken piece, but here is the fix. Maybe this should be called a MacGuyver, but it's most surely stronger than the original. The hole is drilled through the post, then a length of coat hanger fed through and epoxied in place:
