heads up on "locked at Welcome screen"

    For the color taskalfa.

When the troubleshooting guide ask you to load the firmware, EXPECT NO ACTIVITY ON THE SCREEN UNTIL ITS LOADING THE PANEL SOFTWARE.

When you wait, wait the length of a typical firmware update, "few minutes" is just bad description. An improperly loaded machine will do the scanner warm up, but not the engine/motors/noise makers.

The dip switch is at the the bottom of the panel, very very small, close to the left corner on the PCB.

    guilty as charged.

Any particular model this relates to?

      My guess? 250ci/300ci/400ci/500ci/552ci.

If your doing the combined firmware you should see % progress for each file, Engine, Language, Fax, Browser, etc., with Display last. On the earlier versions it could take up to 45 minutes to do the combined firmware, but since they've separated the options, that time is down to ~12 minutes, with an additional 2 minutes for the options version 1.12

Still, never interrupt a firmware upgrade until a full hour has passed (irretrievably stuck), or the Completed screen comes up. Be sure to actually read the Completed screen. It's the only time you'll get a chance to see if all the firmware files loaded "Complete", "No Change", or "Failed". If you ignore this screen it can be very difficult to diagnose what firmware failed. "Complete" or "No Change" is fine. "Failed", that will be a problem. If you are extraordinarily lucky, a second try may succeed. Usually not. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Absolutely positively exercise patience on this trouble.

The one I was working on had no progress update until the display portion, thus this shout out.
I was watching the usb LED for activity.

Thanks for the heads up. Wish I knew about this about six weeks ago. We had a machine that wouldn't go past the welcome screen. Firmware updates were usually stopped after five to ten minutes because we didn't think they were working.
