    Replacing HDD in TaskAlfas

Alright, I need someone to give an honest and proven answer to this question. Can you replace an OEM hard drive with any old hard drive... given the specs are the same. Kyocera tells me you can't because of a unique identifier. I suppose this means that Kyocera is given a block of serials from the HDD manufactures and the copiers are coded to only use that block? But I swear I have read that you can use a store bought drive. Right now I am trying to get a 7200rpm 80gb seagate drive to work in an older 300ci and it comes up with a 0640 code. I have ran U20 and U21 (initializing all memory, and formatting HDD) and it still comes up with a 0640. When initializing all memory next to the execute button on the touch screen it just says "01" no "power on/off". It also takes about 10 minutes for it come up with this code, where in most cases 0640 codes come up pretty quick. Thanks!

Did you run U024 (HDD formatting) to initialize the hard disk?

I just did one a few weeks ago. I ordered it off Tiger Direct. I "thought" I ordered the smallest one I could find as I was worried about compatibility issues. It ended up with a 1TB drive. I backed theirs up using 917 & imported it to the new one. Don't recall having to do anything special at all. I would try the 024 though.
      Hope that helps !

The 300Ci works fine with a 7200RPM Seagate 80Gb HDD and yes you can use drives from other manufacturers as long as the specs are the same, they also usually can be larger than OEM. Newer machines will format when booting a new drive. Do you know that the drive you are trying to use is in working order. I have not rum into a Kyocera machine that I cannot replace the disk drive with a generic one.

I do it all the time. I just try to find the smallest one I can with all the same specs. Also, sometimes you can take them out of the machine and re-format on a computer and re-install. Works if it is not a mechanical failure.

Some HDD's can be hardware configured with a jumper plug(near the cable connections) to lock them to 30-40Gb fixed size.
