FS-4200DN --FRPO X9, 1; does not take --trying to stop cascading.

I am attempting to stop the printer from rolling from one drawer to the other when empty. The manual says in the apendex that the two acceptable commands for the X9 setting are 0 and 1, however when I attempt to use the command !R! FRPO X9, 1; EXIT; to change the setting it remains at 0 and will not change. Using an older FRPO manual I found it would also accept 2 and 8 as settings, but neither of them have the affect that I want. Because of the type of work our customers do they have to have labels in the second tray, but configured as plain paper since kyocera doesn't technicly allow that. I am trying to get it to stop printing when one or the other drawer runs out.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might help stop the drawers from cascading?

We are using the printer with one extra drawer, printing from a Linux system that has to support other brands and models of printer so the program can not send media type messages. (The other printers all support labels in the 2nd drawer) We cannot use the multipurpose tray because the customers goes through hundreds of labels a day. Grouping does not work with only 2 drawers set to the same media type. I have exhausted the suggestions and limited help Kyocera has been able to give me.

It severely limits your options when the customer is not even using the manufacturers print driver.

I was having a similar discussion about an FS-C2626MFP on another forum. I was trying to get the machine to auto cassette switch when printing, and Grouping worked for me. Another member said that they had to get a special firmware written by Kyocera to achieve the same result.

As far as I can tell the newer machines do not accept even a fraction of the PreScribe commands. So that doesn't surprise me too much.

Unless you have a way of inserting tray commands into your Linux app, I think you're out of luck. What emulation?

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

yeah, unfortunitly the "customer" in this case is our own company (we do complete systems for pharmacy's, Including printing) , my boss's have shot down the idea of configuring CUPS with the individual printers PPD files in favor of a generic PPD file to minimize difficulty's in re-routeing printing and swapping out printers.

Our systems generate postscript files with a PJL wrapper for the labels and we do include commands as far as which tray to print to in the generated postscript files the system creates but they Kyo printers still roll over when the the plain paper or label tray are empty. The Xerox and Lexmark printers we have used in the past and are still out in the field don't have the same problem thankfully.

What is the other forum you are a part of? I like to bookmark as many referance points that I can for when I run into this kind of problem.

Possible workaround: Change the media type of one tray and set driver media to plain, then it shouldn't auto tray switch.

Looks like kyocera might be fixing this after all. I've been in contact with someone over there and I'm testing out a new firmware. Details to come if it works!

            Re: FS-4200DN --FRPO X9, 1; UPDATE

Hi all, I have been told that the FRPO manual is incorrect. the X9 command should be set to "2" not "1"
we set this up on a fs-2020, our customer is using macros that use tray numbers not media type. we set the page setup in word to select tray 1 and when it ran out it did not take from tray 2 and vice versa. we have to have paper type as unspecified, but you may be able to use different setup's.
Hope this solves this pain in the butt issue that we have all had to deal with.
