Ok so we got 4 of these machines in from the wholesaler, and 3 are stuck in the blue welcome screen. I tried to flash with the latest firmware, but the usb drive was never recognized(the same usb drive was used to upgrade the 4th machine just fine). Any ideas and thanks in advance. Oh and by the way I do have manuals both the service and parts.

Is the hard drive still there? I'm betting it got destroyed and not replaced. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Maybe they were removed, wiped, then reinstalled. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:

Check the memory. If you have a working one, swap the hddsComment

Can you update the firmware via a CompactFlashcard on these models? I've seen in the past if the firmware can not be updated via USB, for whatever reason, try the CF slot (and it works 9 times out of 10, at least on other models).
Maybe this will work for you too...Do for one what you wished you could do for everyone. - Andy StanleyComment

Re: 420 and 520's stuck on the welcome screen
As a follow up on this topic, the CF slot on the 420/520 is located behind one of those rectangular access plates on the back. I've always preferred to use compact flash firmware update when the option is available. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:

Re: 420 and 520's stuck on the welcome screen
I have same issue, I have tried several things like removing all accessories, replacing Main PCB and memory. I will try and go back tomorrow with HDD and Compact Flash Card but would like to know what exactly corrected your issue.Comment

I would try the new firmware via compact flash that was my next thing to tryComment

Re: 420 and 520's stuck on the welcome screen
The 420i/520i will come up with a HDD error if the drives are missing, This means that in the boot sequence it is getting past the welcome screen, You could possibly have corrupt firmware this would cause the symptoms that you have. If the firmware is corrupt the machine will not get far enough into the boot process to allow it to process the firmware update from either from the USB ports or the CF port. Did you verify that the firmware was installed? there are two slots, one for firmware and one for the Fax memory.Comment

Re: 420 and 520's stuck on the welcome screen
Sorry that I do not have a concrete answer, but because many things have been done and you can take it for what it is. But I will not start from the beginning, since it is pointless.
Before getting it fixed, we followed the bulletin from 5/19/10, including the step about resetting the panel CPU by using the dip switch on the bottom of the ops panel. Well I guess that is not advised because I will have to individually load firmware to the ops panel. The fix I believe is the memory on Main PCB and Ops panel. I am not sure if Ops panel had anything to do with the original or not because the dip switch was done before doing many thing and may have added to the issue.
Thanks for the assistance.Comment

Re: 420 and 520's stuck on the welcome screen
For me, I use the BOOT / NORMAL as a last resort. This procedire must be followed to the letter or it will fail. I have not seen any trouble with the memory on the operation panel PWB. Mostly what I see is corrupt firmware. If you are getting machines that someone else has been working on there is no way of knowing what has been done to them and you will need to try one thing at a time.Comment
