Checking connector pin voltage help needed

I am trying to check the voltage from a connector
on a main pcb fs1135 it is a really small connector. with small wires, i tried to put a staple in the connector to no avail, i cant get a staple into it, it is to small of a connector. I was thinking of putting a pin
into the wire and see if I can read voltage from that, not sure if I would damage the wire or not. Does anyone have any tips on how to check
voltage on these really small connector, and wires

tod,if I cant get to the other end like a clutch or something I use an opened safety pin and any other ground on the machine in case I short out the board.

Thanks for your reply , the componet side you generally can get to, but i want to check it at the main board , i cant get a staple in their, I think safety

blsquires is right. On small connectors like this you can use a small safety pin to check voltages on the connector. The wires these days are very small, so I would refrain from piercing the wire itself. He also mentioned checking it at the other end. That point you are trying to check goes somewhere. Look at the schematic and see where it goes and you can check it there as well. Also, if you look closely at the connector you will see where the wire is crimped into the connector. Hopefully its on the top of the connector, but sometimes its on the bottom. I use a flashlight to see, it helps. I check a lot of connectors this way as well.

In this situation I use two straight pins of the larger variety with clamping meter leads. You can pierce the insulation without damaging the wire too much ... but I prefer to touch the end of the pin from the PWB. On most currently used connectors the pin passes through the connector, and you can get contact at the pin or the metal crimp contact for each wire. If you're just trying to pin-out the harness (resistance check), you can disconnect from the PWB and slip the pin right in the same hole. Sounds vaguely erotic doesn't it? =^..^=
