    Fax Error KM-5050

    Hey guys,

Got a bank that buys alot of these from us, and at one location they installed an alarm system and it uses the same phone line as the fax on our machine. The IT guy said the alarm is dormant until it is set off, then overrides the system and takes priority.

However since putting it in, they can no longer receive faxes, only send... When sending them a fax the handshake doesnt happen, it just rings until it times out.

Does anyone know something I could do in simulation to resolve this issue?

    Re: Fax Error KM-5050

The way this is usually set up, is that the fax is set to answer in one ring, and the alarm system set to answer in 4 rings. We've had situations when the copier is set to 2 rings and the alarm system 4 rings, and after a power outage the alarm modem resets to 1 ring, diverting all fax receptions to the modem. If you call the line it goes right to the modem. The modem has a distinctly different sound from the fax. You'll be able to identify the difference.

From what you've told me, I would conclude that you do not have the current fax number, or it's been changed. If it was the correct number either the modem or fax should pick up, not no answer.

Another possibility is that the phone line just never rings. Hook up your pots handset, and see if it rings (110vac). If it doesn't ring, the fax will never try to pick up the call.

If you still think that it's the alarm system interfering, get the permission of onsite management before temporarily disconnecting the phone line from the modem. If you are correct, the alarm modem cannot interfere and the fax should pick up. If you look hard enough in your fax operators manual you'll find a paragraph qualifying that the fax must be on a dedicated phone line to operate properly. Show the customer that little paragraph.

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
