    Open-source drivers

I am looking for a new color laser printer. I am getting rid of my old printer because I found out that it sends information to the manufacturer about my printing. Do you know whether any of the manufacturers offer open source drivers such that such behavior could be audited?

If your gateway device does not maintain a log that you can use to see the address of where it is sending information so that you can block it in the gateway firewall, use Wire Shark to monitor to create a log.

And if you select no, does it still send some information? is it possible to use it without giving it any connectivity to the internet? My HP printer refuses to work after a while if I take internet away from it.

I believe Hp has strip down driver try to uninstall all HP software and only download the driver not the complete software package

I start to wonder what type of printing you are doing?
Almost every manufacturer asks upon complete software package install if client permits sending of statistics data to it. Easy to say no or just go add printer way and point it to only actual driver file.

I think if you install the print driver RAW, it don't tell nobody about nothing.

Oh, so what is this? Thankfully, I assume it is not the 'Printer Police' that came to visit with a moral speech. I'd like to hear your reason for saying that to anyone

Lets see, started working in the industry in 1980, been a member here for 5+ years and has 290 posts. I would say he has experience with multiple manufactures.

You need an attitude adjustment or you are not going to get much help here.

To answer your question, mikrev, yes I do.

To set up a print driver RAW is to set it up totally manually in a windows system. That means set up the port manually, usually a TCP/IP port. Then usually browse out to the print driver .INF file or sometime .PPD file. Then tie it all up and test the print driver and make sure it works. You do have to have the manufactures driver to do this. But installing a print driver RAW or manually steps around the manufactures built in BS that sends reports.

                          At least in my experience.

                          I hope this helps.

The transmission of that data has got nothing to do with your print drivers...
That data will be collected on the machine itself. Manufactures are not looking at sensitive data or rather not supposed to anyway..

Mmm Huawei and Hikvision should definitely not make printers and time soon. Xerox back in the day had a camera strapped to the machine inside...

Years ago SCM made an electrostatic copier that had a strobe light for exposure. The power pack for that could kill, 25KV @ 15 amps. I had to replace one. It took about 30 minutes following the step to prepare it to be removed. There were a number of shortuing jumper that had to be installed to drain down all the storage capacitors before you could disconnect and remove it.
