general scan machine matters

Please let me know what is primary scanning derection and secondary scanning derection.
i check toshiba manuel ,but still i donnt get it.

Main scan (primary) is left to right, Sub Scan (secundary) is up/down.

how can scanner scan up/down?

I've never heard of it referred to as primary or secondary.

Like Eric says, main scan is the direction that the laser polygon mirror writes, front of the machine to the back. Sub scan is the direction the exposure lamp (light source 1) moves, lead to trail edge. I'm not sure how this translates into primary or secondary. =^..^=
