MPC5502 Locks Up During Normal Operation

The customer has a MPC5502 that locks up during normal printing operation when a user tries to use the console for any other function such as copying, faxing, or user tools at the same time. The customer has to reboot the MFP several times a day to get it to work again. The Op panel was replaced, hard drive re-formatted, and all firmware updated to the latest versions. I'm looking at replacing the controller as a possible fix, but want to be certain I'm on the right track.

I would think about replacing the hard drive before replacing the controller.

          Check your wall voltage.

If it's bad, there's your problem.

If it checks good, and you have access to a voltage monitor, put that on for at least a few days.

Bad power can (and will) drive you nuts.

Also, don't fall for the "our old machine had no problems" line; not all machines handle bad voltage the same.

Have you printed the SMC report to see if there were any non displayed SC codes

I had a similar problem with 3 MP 6002s and an MP 7502 at one account earlier this year.

Very intermittent SC230 codes that would pop up during a long copy or print run.

Turned out to be a power problem, that even the monitor we put on one would not pick up (although it's an el cheapo monitor).

What really threw us off at first is that all the new machines had GlobalScan and Enhanced Locked Print installed.

The installed software is evil and must be the problem, right? WRONG! Even after removing both the problem persisted.

When moved to new locations, the problem went away.

The equivalent 01 machines we replaced never had an issue.

Many inexpensive are only single channel and only monitor hot to neutral. If that was the case, the problem might have been a bad ground. Many years ago, I had a customer with 2 dedicated word processors that used floppies for storing files storage. Both machines kept corrupting floppies. Equipment manufacturer sent a rep out with a 3 channel Dranetz monitor. It showed constant hits on all three channels. The rep recommended line filters on both machines and installing a dedicated ground and ground rod for the machines, since the machines were in a portable building that used the building frame as part of the ground and no separate ground rod. The customer had an election out the next day to install the ground rod. After that was installed, no more problems.

Had a similar m/c doing this - wouldn't come out of power save. Firmware didn't correct it even though an update said it would fix it. Turned out to be the PSU.

Is the panel off (dark) when this happens? I have had problems with the sleep/energy save & power off timers - when all set to the same time (example; 60 minutes). As mentioned firmware - both energy saver & fax (if equipped)
