    [Misc] copy issue

    Hi Guys

We have a customer with an old Ricoh mp2500 mono machine. Print quality is perfect and copy not too bad however customer wants to copy originals which have fairly fine pencil lines. On Auto the copy is just visible but if you move man adjust up to max comes out good. Customers being Customers he wants the machine set so copy comes out good when machine is set to Auto to save him messing about with settings although moving the setting up is not hard work!! . I have gone into sp settings for scan etc but cannot seem to increase or decrease the lamp power. Is it possible to do this?. Dont usually work on these so any help would be appreciated

Pencils, the bane of any copier tech, the graphite output is reflective enough that a number two pencil is required for standardized tests. Back in the analog days, placing a piece of yellow cellophane on the platen glass would make pencil copies acceptable, but that won't work anymore, will it?
If that customer has shown you a setting that will work, make that the default setting. If other things look wrong then, make sure to let them know it is their fault.

Man up & tell him his original is very faint & that is why the copier has a option to adjust density when auto is too light, also point out the age of his machine!!!

Yep, l know what you mean but this Customer is one of our largest spending a fortune every Month on other machines and this guy is the top guy and loves this machine. Suggested upgrade but as mentioned he loves this machine and is a lazy B******. Not to worry we will find a way around it somehow.

Appreciate the comments. I remember the old analogues well. Tweek the image pot and you could go from solid black to white copies in an instant. Also remember the yellow cellophane although had forgotten until you mentioned it. Might try to set darkest setting as defualt if l can find out how. Don't do many of these. prefer newer Canons, Ricohs etc.
              Thanks again

We use to refer to the yellow cellophane as intensifier sheets. They were a little thicker than actual cellophane, more like the gel sheets used to make color filters spot lighting on stages. Gel sheets are still still available. Search "spot light gel sheets". 21 X 24 inch sheets can be found for as little as $5.99 plus tax and shipping. Not a bad price if it will make you look like a hero to the customer.

Might check the scanner section (SP4) in copy or system service mode to see if there's a manual gamma adjustment. It's been a while since I've seen one of those little machines, so I don't remember. I've used the manual gamma adjustment to darken scans in larger color machines once or twice.
If you do find a manual gamma adjustment, don't take a really big swing at it. The most I've adjusted the values is by plus or minus two.

Have you tried having them set the original type as Pale or Text? Ricoh's default setting is for text/photo. Setting to Text sets a lighter shade grey that is read as black. Pale uses an even lighter of grey as black.

Yes did try pale and did improve it a bit. How do you change default from text/photo to text?
