Just do FTP. Simplest scanning method going.

+1 for this. It's become my default recommendation for cases like this. Works every time, and no need to fuzz with OS versions, firmware updates, twain drivers and whatnot. Remember to uncheck that the FTP Server config console shows on login, and the user won't even notice it's there. Easier to troubleshoot too, if needed.

The problem here is that many major corporations and It personnel do not feel that FTP is sufficiently secure. As for FileZilla, most company domains do not allow normal users to install software. It must be done by an Administrator and most larger corporations will not allow it.

          Check the SFTP option then.

As for the software side of things, any large company that runs a secure domain using group policy will have a server that you can set up scan to SMB on so the point is moot. We're talking small companies with just a router and no server.

Re: Scan directly to a laptop without using a router

Some years ago, I installed an MP 161 at a state office, it was for a small cluster of 3 people to use.

Since it was not an "approved" model to put on the network, I used a USB cable connected to one of the PCs to print, and we then shared the printer from that one workstation.

The customer assumed that scanning would work (at least to the host PC) using USB. Nope.

I offered them the idea of installing a second NIC in the host PC (with a totally different IP, 192.x versus the 10.x the network had), and crossing over into the copier.

The department manager thought it was a wonderful idea, but IT saw it as a risk, and shot it down.

            Hey, I tried.

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned (too lazy to read all the posts) check to be sure the firewall is not stopping the scans.

We're also talking a company that does not want TWAIN or WIA scanning. Sounds like they do not want any add on to their computers.

Or just that TWAIN is awful [emoji6]

If I had a customer telling me it couldn't be on the network, and also telling me I cannot install software, then I would simply tell them to get back to me when they decide which magical way they want me to go about it. They want to be awkward, let them do it because it's them that'll suffer not you.

You could tell them to buy a router that has a shared USB port and use it like a NAS on a separate wifi network. I'd offer that as my final solution as it requires no software on the clients and the network would be completely separate to their secure one.

Any way you cut it, the wired side between the MFP and PC is going to have to be "ad hoc'd"!....just gotta love it when the customer has a "secure" way of doing things with a wireless/wired network!!!

PS-scan to SMB would be the most simple since it is already implemented on the PC--just make an account for the MFP to log into "just in case" the customer decides to change *their* password!!!...and don't forget to make an *exception* in the security/firewall software for the scan folder!

If I had a tech that insisted on using FTP, he would be looking for a new job.

Good job I'm top tech at my place then [emoji6]

I never insisted, just stated I use it a lot on customers with no real network to speak of. I mostly use SMTP and SMB to a proper network share. This seems to be a customer using the word 'security' a lot and insisting you use no common protocols.

If you were using a *nix file share server, the Samba would be appropriate...secondary would be FTP!
