[Jamming] Lanier MPC 4500 Tray one paper jam

    Hi Guys,

This is my personal machine for work. 4 trays installed and after filling tray 1 with a full ream of A4 paper (no problems before this), as soon as trying to print from tray 1, I get a paper jam message and to open the side door and clear. Open side door, no paper to be seen. Close door, machine resets as normal and tries to print, immediate paper jam message and repeat ad infinitum. Tried printing from all other trays and all good. Pulled the paper and replaced, no difference. I can hear the paper lift when the tray is closed and cant see any issues, but it will not feed from tray 1 no matter what we do. Any clues ????

The most common cause would be worn feed/pick up rollers.

Take out the paper tray to allow you to reach in & give them a clean, any alcohol based cleaner or WD40 will help.

Is there any skid marks on the paper at the first pickup roller ?
If there is no skid marks check that the pickup tyre unit drops down when inserting the entire tray.

      1. There is a plastic leaver that releases the pickup tyre down on the paper.See callout 2 in the attached image. Check the leaver is insitu and the frame is not broken.

      2. Check the feed rollers and associate gears are not broken shown in callout 1

      3. You may also like to check the retard clutch in callout 3 is free to turn an not binding.

From the MPC4500 to the MPC 5000 and even the MP5000 this bushing fixes most of my jamming.

If cleaning the feed rollers doesn't work, what is most likely the cause is a bad paper feed unit. I have had several of these go out on this model and have replaced this multiple times and that always took care of the problem. Before you go out and buy a new one however, you can troubleshoot it to make sure that is the cause. First make sure it is not anything related to the cassette or having the paper guides misaligned. Run your A4 paper out of tray 2...if everything works fine from tray two, switch cassettes and test again. If everything still runs fine you know it has nothing to do with the cassettes (which it probably doesn't). In that case, the paper feed unit for tray 1 and tray 2 are the same so you can do a switch-a-roo on those two and put the tray 2 paper feed unit in for tray 1. This requires removing the side door and be careful with the black plastic paper guide when removing it, the hinges on the end can easily break if you don't take it out properly. Once you have those two paper feed units switched you can test tray 1 out again and it should run smooth as butter. If that doesn't work let us know and we will troubleshoot further.

Very common problem on ALL machines that use this feed unit. No need to replace the entire unit. Just take it out of the machine and rebuild it. Get a new feed lever, one-way gear for the feed roller, clean ALL shafts where the one-ways ride and - VIOLA - works like a champ and is quite.

agree with copier tech, pick up rollers could be dirty

                2 Questions:

                1. If you load less than a full ream, does it work?
                2. [STUPID QUESTION] Is the left end fence all the way up against the left edge of the stack? And is the stack all the way up against the right edge of the tray?

And if the surface of the rollers are slick, they need to be replaced to alleviate the issue.

Actually even more basic - make sure the paper stock is something the machine is actually able to run, and then fan the paper to make sure there isn't residual glue from the ream wrapper or something holding it together.
