    Blank page detection

OK, this may be a silly question...

I have a new MP 7503 on my demo room floor, and a sales rep just asked me why when "detect blank pages" is enabled for scanning, blank pages are still produced in her scans.

We put in 6 pages, 3 of which were completely blank, and got 6 pages in the scan.

All firmware is current as of yesterday, including the SOP.

Does blank page detect require the OCR option? I searched the operator manuals on it, and found nothing usable. I still need to check the service manual and the PSG.

A call to the help desk was anything but rewarding.

    Thanks.

    Re: Blank page detection

I may stand to be corrected, but I believe it only applies to the very first page of the document.
I suppose, just in case the originals have been placed incorrectly

      Blank Page Detect
Use the Blank Page Detect function to prevent blank pages being scanned.
If the first page of the originals is blank, the machine beeps to warn you that you might have placed blank originals.
      • On
      • Off

When the Blank Page Detect function is set to [On], the outermost 1mm of an original's edge border cannot be scanned.
Blank pages of custom size originals may not be detected.
This function is available only for scanning from the ADF.
The machine cannot perform blank page detection on the second or subsequent pages of an original.

Note that I got this from the MP 171 manual, but it's probably the same.

Sandy and sturmtrooper are correct. Blank page detect is only for the first page. It is to idiot proof against people like me who occasionall put originals face down instead of face up. If you need to scan a document that contains both 1 and 2 sided originals and want to remove blank back from 1 sided originals you have to use batch mode, mixed 1 and 2 sided originals.

For the sake of differentiation, it works differently on Toshibas. A Toshiba will detect and ignore all blank pages in a set of originals, for either copying or scanning.

I have a customer who uses this feature on almost everything. If the slit glass white plate gets dirty enough and the original registration through the DF varies even slightly, you'll get a small dark smear on the leading edge of scanned originals, and is interpreted as "image", and is not ignored. My enduser is now in the habit of cleaning the slit glass and white plate frequently. No problems in months. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
            1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
            2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
            3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
            4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
            5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Since you mentioned OCR option before I believe there is a blank page detection option within OCR that allows you to eliminate blank pages from an entire document using that, but it likely only works when OCR scanning.
