Need some tips on an SR5000 finisher

    Hello everyone,

I have an SR5000 (B830) finisher on a 1306ex which has never really had any major issues just broken staple cover rear, and shift tray lift motor failures which seem to be pretty common in this one. Recently however I have a customer that runs a large job daily that is sorted every 3-10 sheets so its constantly shifting, the nice little stack arms are always goofing up but that doesnt seem to bother to much, mainly for some reason after the first set comes out and the tray shifts the first and second sheet come out dang near at the same time, the first sheet barely hits the tray before page 2 is landing on it, whats happening is that page 2 is pushing the first one almost off the tray there isnt enough time between the sheets for the first one to land and be pulled to the stack by the foam rollers (which are new rollers) so every set is messed up, when 1000 pages are stacked it looks like someone just threw the stack on there, pages are sticking out all over the place.

I have seen 1 or 2 sheets sometimes not fall in line but in the last few weeks its doing this all the time. I am not sure how to correct this as it looks like its just timing between page 1 and 2, after page 2 comes out the rest of the pages in that sort have perfect timing until it shifts and kicks out the first 2 sheets again. Like i said what this customer prints is a few sheets then shift, few sheets then shift anywhere when the job is complete there are 300-1000 pages on the tray with about 200 shifts.

I have also noticed the shift tray makes a lot of noise when it shifts front or rear its slapping hard dont know that i have ever noticed it to be as loud as it is now, but i dont see any loose belts or the shifting motor/cam to be worn, i know sometimes the shift motor bracket gets worn and becomes sloppy.

I have run into some J112 jams also that i think are stepper motor related, so I am thinking of replacing 2 stepper motors and the 2 drive motors and replacing all the pulleys along the timing belts. the machine has over 10 million on it and they use the shift tray for 99% of the jobs they run.

I am wondering if anyone has any tips on the stacking, i dont know if the tray angle deforms over time or if the side brackets wear out, also any tips on the stack arms those things seem to kick on an off willy nilly today they were actually not coming down and just slapping backwards against the top cover. Anyone ever modified the rear staple head cover so it doesn't break every 10k staples. Also not sure which motor they consider to be transport motor, goose guides says j112 is the transport motor but i can see 4 motors that all drive belts to transport paper one way or another.

thanks in advance for any tips.

There is an optional shift tray jogger unit that can be fitted to get round problems like this.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

It does have the jogger unit, that was what i meant by description of "arms", for some reason the program they use in house doesn't always use the jogger unit but the pages that are getting pushed off are being pushed to the left of the tray basically over the tray, the jogger is in operation at this time but has no effect on the pages going out to far. The jogger arms were slapping against the jogger cover rotating essentially backwards yesterday after rebooting machine they corrected themselves.

Other then static or timing i cant figure out why it wants to push paper to far over the tray. I may just replace the tray cover, side brackets, and re-adjust the lifting belts.

The SR790 has a similar internal paddle shift mechanism and the bushing the motor turns gets sticky, stopping free rotation. I can't visualise the SR5000 method but if memory serves there is a motor that performs a similar function on the exit. Maybe it's bushings are sticking or worn.

The 5000 has a motor with a timing gear and peg on it the motor turns the gear front to rear the peg inserts into a slot on the shift wall that moves the whole tray and plate from front to rear. I have seen the slot where the peg goes get sloppy, but i think the 790 shifts the paper before exit where as the 5000 moves the tray before paper exits. If thats what your thinking of. I might have to get some pictures of the stack, its hard to describe without visualizing it.

Unless you have actually seen the second sheet coming out tag tail on top of the first sheet, this sounds more like a static problem. Check/replace the static discharge brush on the exit of the finisher. Alsi check that the SR5000 does not have a floating ground.

Thanks for the post slim, after you mentioned that i thought of two things i know there is a mylar on the end with two long "hairs" i would call them that i didnt remember seeing they have been worn completly off and the discharge brush is there but I am betting if the mylars have worn off the brushes on the discharge plate are probably all nipped off and not really making good paper contact, so I have ordered the mylar and discharge brush see if this helps.
