ricoh aficio mp 4002 grey background on edges

I don't normally service ricohs.I got a call for grey on the edges of the page and it appeared to be from the charge roller.First,I relaced it with a third party roller, then an oem one. Both of them started out fine, but within 200 pages the image defect returned. I vaccuumed all excess toner in the drum unit and cleaned the blade, but the roller looked like it was picking up residue from somewhere and I can't tell where or why. The drum has less then 50,000 copies. The machine says the transfer maintenance is overdue. Can this have anything to do with it ? When I rebuilt the drum unit, I had to change the charge roller 2 or 3 times before it would print clean up until now. Thank you for any input you might have.

Dump the old developer out. Clean the mag roller to remove all the black toner crust and make it shiney. I use Fedron for this. Install fresh developer and initialize the TD sensor.

I haven't worked on anything that new, but I do have some ideas that might help if time permits.
If that gray area is on the leading edge of the prints, you might want to try a different transfer roller. On older machines, after a while the surface of that roller would in time get packed with toner and would cause a problem quite similar to the one that's annoying you right now.
It also might not hurt to check the used toner recovery blade, which is the flexible mylar just below the cleaning blade. If it gets damaged, toner will spew out of the waste toner area all over everything.
Sorry if this was a waste of time.

Also, empty the waste toner, maybe replace the transfer belt andthe transfer belt cleaning blade..

i would suggest on the developer replacement and cleaning the magnet roller...
fix the customer first then fix the machine... its simple and makes life more easy.

I agree with this, this is the best option.

We use scotch brite and a wire brush for the crevices on the mag roller. gets em nice and shiny. Fedron makes me hurl

If the transfer belt is over I would go ahead and PM it, new belt, blade, and empty the waste, clean up the felt area. I would do that first, then take out the developer unit and clean mag rollers. The developer is supposed to last 300k but I find most of the time 150-225k once it starts to have issues it just never ends until you PM it.

If you have not worked on these much I would recommend reading through the developer replacement procedure this model differs from most and has a few extra steps and SPs to check before just initializing the developer.
