If the machine boots but just displays the SC at the bottom of the screen, enter System SP mode and print the diagnostic page, SP-5990-005. It should show if there is a HDD.

There's nothing special about Ricoh HDD's. Any off-the-shelf HDD will work -so long as it's AT LEAST the size of the original. Larger caocity is OK

        thanks.
i never run these machines till i pull all the units out and inspect for any screws, paper clips or staples
that might wipe out a drum or ITB..I learned that the hard way way back.
I pulled the back and no HDD but they did leave the 2 connectors so I am happy.
Just found a 250 gig drive on my shelf and will try that..I think the mpc3501 used a 320gig but dont know the 02s as
        no manual yet here

When they first came out they had 250 GB HDD's so your 250 GB should be fine. Ricoh did update the part's manual to 320 GB drives.

I ended up swapping out a hard drive from my mpc 3002 and machine came up
with a message showing HDD swapped out and the a SC 876-05
"Installed NVRAM or HDD which is used in another machine"..
Installed NVRAM or HDD which is used in another machine
              1. Reinstall the previous NVRAM or HDD.
              2. Initialize the HDD with SP5832-004.

after option 2 it seems fine.
