Used to change the alignment of the lead edge of the paper to the hot/pressure rollers. Can be used for thin paper, to move the entrance guide to the left. This setting allows more direct access to the gap between the hot and pressure rollers, and prevents thin paper from buckling against the hot roller which can cause blurring at the leading edge of the copy. (taken from the Aficio 1035/1045 service manual)

If it not in the service manual or trouble shooting guide then trial and error.
