    MPc5502 not recognizing new toner

I have to meet a tech Monday that has an MPc5502 that keeps saying to insert a new black toner bottle. This is not an ADD TONER issue. He updated the firmware & was able to run copies afterwards, but the message showed up just as he was getting his ticket signed and he can't get past it.

He's already tried 2 new bottles, replaced the RFID and replaced the IOB pcb. He also downloaded & installed the firmware that just came out last week.

Any ideas??? The only thing I can think of off hand is to re-initialize the engine.

Thanks for any & all ideas.

Usually this is caused by a faulty pump, but can sometimes be a faulty or shorted TD sensor.

Appreciate the response, but this isn't a false add toner issue. The copier isn't recognizing the new toner bottle. Sp3045 doesn't help, etc.

Since he updated the firmware as all good techs should, and then the problem appeared, I would check that the machine is not a RM unit that needs a different engine firmware version. I had this problem and the correct firmware corrected it.

Awesome!!! Strange how tech support was unaware of this.

Will post the actual message after I get out there.

Re: MPc5502 not recognizing new toner

First off the display says "Toner Cartridge Setting Error".

It is a known issue according to Ricoh Tech support. As Brianneoe stated there is a specific Engine firmware for the Greenline version - 1.11a.04. It doesn't tell you that on esource, but there is a message in the readme saying it's only for machines whose S# has an RM suffix. Usually you can just load the correct firmware and you're back up & running. Usually, but not today. I even tried going back 2 versions of the Engine firmware.

Tried an Engine clear without any luck. Reseated the new RFID pcb, but still no luck.

I then reseated the BCU eeprom and all their print jobs started coming out.

I then shut it down to remove the nvram backup SD card. When I turned it back on my error was back. Reseated the eeprom a few more times, but it never came back to ready.

Hopefully a new eeprom will do the trick.

I had the same issue when I "accidentally" updated the firmware on NON greenline copier using the GREENLINE engine firmware. Reverting to the correct engine firmware corrected the issue.
