    vertical fading

My printer, LANIER LP116cn, is leaving a vertical fade on every page I print. What is causing this and how to I correct it?

      Re: vertical fading

I am simply a user. I am 3 months in on my first office job, at the age of 55. I have absolutely no IT experience at all. I was a Pastry Chef, so my expertise lies more in cheesecake, Petit Fours or macarons.

I have checked the toner, it is good.
How do I check the fuser?

You don't give to many details. I assume this is a black print issue. In addition to what was already mentioned you could be dealing with a faulty drum unit or transfer unit among other things. If you have ruled out toner you're going to need a tech. The bottom line, however, is you're dealing with a printer that is about 13 years old. It's not worth putting any money into this unit. I recommend replacing the printer.

By vertical do you mean parallel to the direction of paper travel or perpendicular as each has different causes.

Parallel. Each time I print I get a "strip" about 3/4 of an inch wide that prints much lighter than the rest of my document or picture.
It starts about 5 3/8" in from the left edge of the paper and runs from the top of my document to the bottom.

Sounds like a dirty laser shield glass.

the way is fades out and then comes back strong I would look at:

Toner Cart ( more likely )
                      Transfer Roller
Fuser ( next most likely )

the laser glass would have the fade completely down the page.

how did you check the toner? Just by the toner meter? when was the last time you replaced it? did you check the problem w/ a new toner.. ( or even a used one.. if it shows a different issue then you know it is toner related )

My first instinct was toner. I pulled the Black toner and replaced it with a new cassette. It did not help. I do not know when it was last replaced. I have only been in the office since April and I have not replaced the black, however putting the new cassette in did not help.

                            Lanier116 is Ricoh CL2000?

How often does the printer get used? Does the printer sit idle for days ?

Does the problem move all over the printout or stays fixed in the same place on every printout?

Does the problem disappear if you replace the paper in the tray first thing every the morning ?

If it only occurs in black, it looks to me like you may have a drum unit problem, development unit problem or a problem with the black transfer roller in the ITB.
