What SMTP service are you using? Exchange or an online one?
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

        Hit it.

You might need a firmware update to deal with the SSL changes. Mail providers are starting to tighten security, and the MFP needs to be able to get through that wall.

EDIT: Just saw you updated the firmware. Here's the list of machines that support SSL Scan to Email...

SSL encryption for SMTP connections can be specified by the network administrator.
To enable SSL encryption for SMTP connections, follow these steps:
            1. Press the [User Tools/Counter] key.
            2. Press [System Settings].
            3. Press [File Transfer].
            4. Press [SMTP Server].
In "Use Secure Connection (SSL)", press [On].
If you are not using SSL for SMTP connections, press [Off].
When "Use Secure Connection (SSL)" is set to [On], the port number is set to 465 and cannot be changed.
            5.
            6. Press [OK].
            7. Press [Exit].
            8. Press the [User Tools/Counter] key.

If I remember correctly with the MP xx52 models you also need to install a Site Certificate, see attached.

all the above regarding different SMTP server authentication issues are correct, however a great "go around" is setting up a SMTP2GO account.
It's free, easy and works incredibly well. ( No I'm not spamming for them ) Just pointing out a great alternative.
The one drawback, you cannot use a web based email (ie. gmail, etc) for the registration, must use your own domain or ISP assigned email to set this up.

                Agree with you.
I use SMTP2go quite often myself and recommended it here on many threads as well. Excellent service.
As for not being compatible with Webmails like Gmail? I've set up a lot, including my own, and never had an issue. Strange that you do
