    SPC840DN drum units in MPCXX04 and MPCXX04ex

    Hello all,

Well I have been doing a fair bit of experimenting with the SPC840DN CMYK maintenance kits and have successfully got them working which is going to save massive amounts of $$$$$$$$

There is a little bit involved in getting them to work in the MPC3004, MPC3504 and MPC4504, they are a little easier to get going on the MPC5504 and MPC6004 but still require some cosmetic modification.

I'm going to try and get some detailed photos up on the process to get the units going in the next coming days.

I haven't tried the transfer unit or fusing unit yet, the biggest saving has been on the drum units so far so that's what I have been concentrating on.

More to come so stay tuned.....

OK guys so I have the procedure and pictures.....

The first set of pictures is the difference between the original to maintenance kit

Now as you can see most kits have extra markings on them on the dev unit in this particular situation, but the main difference is with the kit PCDU is has a gear drive on the front which when initialised correctly, will automatically full the dev unit on its self rather than using the lever provided behind the transfer cover which is pretty neat

The other main difference is the kit PCDU has a metal shutter over the toner supply entrance, as you can also see there is a spring which closes it once removed, I have been removing the spring and keeping the shutter into the open position

In the photos below you can see the K PCDU difference to the cyan.

The 2 major differences here is 1, the kit PCDU cover is much larger than the original one and 2, the kit PCDU requires 2 screws to keep it on instead of 1

Now if you notice on the K PCDU, where the decal is stating what colour it is, above it the cover continues to go up and meet flush with the rest of the cover, you have to cut the top of the cover so the transfer cover can fit over it otherwise the cover is way too big. I good pair of side cutters will do the trick. Ultimately leave the cover off I will leave that up to you

So now the procedure, I'm not going to lie its a little time consuming cut think of the savings lol

          1. Remove the PCDU out of the box and remove all tape
          2. Split the maintenance kit PCDU apart so the dev unit is separated from the drum
          3. Remove the cover under the dev unit which hides the TD sensor and harness (the cover is the length of the dev unit and is only clipped in)
          4. Carefully with a flat blade screwdriver remove the kit TD sensor and harness and throw them away, they are not needed, the TD sensor is stuck down with double sided tape that's quite strong
          5. Preform the same 4 steps above with the original (genuine) PCDU that you removed from the device and stick the original TD sensor with harness onto the maintenance kit dev unit
          6. Once you have carefully stuck the TD sensor down, place the TD sensor cover back on

Now this is where it get's a little tricky, please note this down

The maintenance kit PCDU has the spring tension released on the lube bar so if you are putting the PCDU into a MPC5504 or MPC6004 you can just put the unit back together and side it right on in

          BUT

If you using the maintenance kit in a MPC3004, MPC3504 or MPC4504, you must remove the lube bar from the PCU and tension it back up, it is extremely easy to do, just remove one of the tension springs, loop the release mechanism around so its got the higher tension and put the spring back onto it and the little white leaver on the other side, takes 30 seconds at the most. Its actually more work putting the lube bar back into the PCU and lining it up rather then doing the tension on the spring

Once this has been done you can then put the unit back together and slide it in.

Sorry I don't have any pictures of this but its pretty self explanatory once you do it.

I am quite confident this procedure will work with no issue, I have these in multiple machine ranging from MPC3004 to MPC6004 and they are working perfectly

My next goal is to get them working in the Metis C1 (03) series and I will advise if I do

If anyone doesn't understand any of the procedures or has any questions please feel free to ask.

That's the next goal to get these working in the Metis C1 devices

As both the Metis C1 and C2 both take the same toner bottles, the dev must be the same, so it's just a matter of pretty much doing the same procedure except using the C1 TD sensor and harness

I will be trying this next week once I get my stock replenished and I will give it a go and advise

Question can you use the mpc4504 color development unit in the spc840?
