You may be geting a dark background as the second hand unit you have put in may be dud. the best way to reset the drum counter is:

At the back of the pc is a flag driven by a half moon gear, if you push this flag back to its home position whilst turning the drum the oppsite way it will stay there, now reinsert the pcu and the machine will to a td inititialize and reset the counter. The only caveat with this method is that the toner in the cleaning unit will add to the dev/toner mix in the dev unit and give you a poor td setup (overtoning) but you can try it anyhows.

The best way to solve this small problem is to replace the pcu assembly as they only last 60k.
Networking skills are advantageous but use of a 3m vacuum cleaner is essential

If you don't have a PCU for this old box, you can use one for a 1027. The only difference is an extra thin plastic pin on the PCU for the newer machine. Snip it off and you're good to go.
