MP4054 Reduce paper in tray 1 to the limit mark...

First time seeing this message, paper tray was only half full.
Tried it with completely full, 1/2 full and almost empty and the message comes and goes randomly.
Swapped out paper tray from a working machine and still gives message.
Turned paper from 11x8 1/2 to 8 1/2x 11 and the message has not come back yet.
Also there is no paper stuck behind the drawer which I have seen may cause this.

Has anyone seen this before or is it a known issue?

My guess is that there is something broken on either the tray 1 feed module or paper lift assembly. Possibly the mount for one of the sensors. Could also be a connector disconnected or a broken wire.

Paper dust in the upper limit sensor causing it to toggle????
      Swap tray1 & tray2 sensor as a test.

Yes I already blew out the sensors but swapping them would be a good test.
Odd that it hasn’t faulted with the paper in the other direction.

Being a new model to me, I have to admit ignorance as to where the tray paper level detection is performed.
Can someone point me in the right direction.
I did notice that when the fault occurs the display shows tray 1 being completely full even though the actual level was less than half.

There's an actuator in the feed station that can be knocked out of place and cause silly problems like this.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

            Hit it.

So now I really messed it up.
I took out the feed unit for tray 1 to check for something dislodged or out of place and when I reinstalled it now it just just continually tries to lift the paper without stopping.
does anyone know if the paper empty sensor also controls the upper limit?

                Part# D2022735 PAPER FEED UNIT:NO.1:ASSY

Those paper end (empty) and paper limit sensors are different sensors. See attached pdf for sensor layout.

I'll research it and give you a call if I think of something.

For your reference: Here's a great overhead view of those sensors from the service manual

4045 series Paper end sensor and paper limit sensors 2.pdf

If that machine continuously tries to lift it's probably not a wire. My bet is the actuator for that paper end sensor was knocked loose and now is not mounted properly and never triggers the end sensor or sensor is bad.

                  4054 series actuator paper end.pdf

                  Hope this helps.

Thanks Robert it was the limit sensor, replaced it and it works.

                        so the problem has returned.

I replaced the entire feed unit for tray 1.

prints about 50 pages then the message comes back on.

As with any Ricoh MFP make sure all your firmware is up to date. Secondly, the '04 series uses the same Rising Motor (AX040273) as the '03 series colour. Your paper height is actually determined by the sensors inside the motor assy (see attached pdf) - this is from the colour '03 series detailed description manual. You may want to swap the Rising Motor with Tray 2 as a diagnostic.

Strip the motor and clean the grease off metal contacts on the gears
