2 weeks back i had a MP 5055 that kept saying to replace the toner even when you put a new toner in.

Checked toner motor & toner detect switch in SP modes. Toner bottle turns and the switch changed states. When you put a toner in and close the door the machine fires up for 5 seconds, spins the drum a few turns and the add toner message never leaves the screen.

I went into SP 3100 and turned off toner end detection and the machine fired up and started printing. It was super overtoned. I ran 50 sky shots with 1" on lead edge blank to prevent jamming and the background went away. Machine seemed good after that.

    History on machine:
Machine does about 40k a month.
First drum went 160k, i usually get 200k on these.
We don't rebuild these drums, put in a entire PCUDU
2nd drum had lines at 80k.
3rd drum seems to be ok so far but im wondering if the machine didn't calibrate properly. April 15 we dropped them 2 MP6054 toners which yield 37k each. Customer chewed thru those and ran out on May 4 (obviously the force is not strong there ). I went down with another toner to verify the toners were empty and they were. I put a new toner in and the machine refused to start up. I had to change SP3100 again. Machine started printing fine with no back ground, after about 30 pages it started leaving background on the back of the pages. There is some toner leaking from the front and rear of the drum.

Im thinking new drum and going into SP3701 and manually triggering the drum replacement to make sure the machine calibrates and resets the counters.

Any thoughts or anybody seen this before?

    Thanks
Did you happen to figure this one out? I'm experiencing the same issue with an MP 6055 with identical symptoms. Have to run 3-100-001 to get it to go then it starts shading background until you turn 3100 back off. Then it will run the whole bottle. Td sensor is reporting only 3.2% so I'm wondering if I need to replace the Dev unit

Replacing the drum unit was the only fix. The wizards i was dealing with smashed the toner in and out so hard the gear that engages the toner bottle was stuck to the rear. The little spring couldn't push it forward.

Don't waste your time rebuilding those things. Just order a new drum unit (complete with DV) and be done with it. You literally turn the machine off, swap the drum, put a new waste tank in and can walk away if you are feeling lazy that day, machine auto calibrates.

When i priced those years ago the difference wasn't that big for the drum and the fuser i think is cheaper to replace then rebuild. The 5054 fuser is more money than a 5055 but the 5055 is backwards compatible. We did it for years.

Perfect. Already have one on order! Thank you. Had me scratching my head for a bit. Putting in the toner hopper assembly was a fun time. 🙃

interested, so can you confirm that the 5055 fuser unit can be installed on the 5054, and is it cheaper?...this would be excellent news for my shelves-

No issues with the North America fusers. Everything reset just fine. Slam in a drum and fuser. Those counters reset. Only thing you had to reset was the transfer roller and waste toner tank. Machine calibrated on reboot. Clean your sensors and rollers and out the door.

We tested it on a 2554 from a lease return. Took a 320k fuser from a 5055 and put in the 2554 and ran 200 pages duplex. Had no issues so we tried it in higher speed 54 series and had no issues. Pretty sure the film unit was the different part number but it doesn't seem to matter.
