[Misc] Card reader issues

I have an MP C4504 that has a pcProx card reader that I need to remove. The machine will not let me access service mode. The machine has a Smart Op panel and when copier is powered on, the screen has a dialogue box that has a grey background with the words "Loading... Please wait." Machine acts likes it is waiting for Java or some other service to load. In the beginning I could unplug HDD, power on the copier and when the machine gave the code, I could access a number pad to enter service mode. I tried turning off Java, and now can't get past the above mentioned dialogue box. Help please.

Yes, machine has HDD. The top slot has a PS sd card, with nothing in lower slot.

You have already tried to remove the hd and enter the service mode. Install a new hd or format the one on another machine.
Update the firmware then

Have you checked to see if Service Lockout is enabled in User Tools?

Thanks to everyone who sent questions and suggestions. I finally broke down and replaced the print controller and HDD to bring this copier out of its funky state.
