is there a way to turn off/disable fax unit besides removing the unit as the customer does not need faxing at this time. the check status lite stays red as if there is a problem with machine, but it is not connected to a fax line.

First address why you have the red light?

You could uninstall the fax app (not just delete it)

the red lite is on because the machine detects that there is no dial tone (as the line is not plugged in ) you can clear by checking the check button but the message will come back if machine is turned off/on.

There is a setting to turn off line detection that will turn off the warning light.

Also make sure that all automatic printing of reports is turned off.

This. It is a feature of all the IM series units, if it doesn't detect a dial tone every so often it will throw a line error. It can be disabled in user tools.
