This model was the last one (I believe) to use the Type 1027 drum. If you order a couple of those they are complete PCDUs; all you need to do is cut off one small plastic pin to make them fit. They are quite cheap, and last quite a long time.

For scanning, I would recommend using Outlook instead. You will need to make sure the firmware is up to date to support TLS and there is a usage limit (which I cannot guarantee they won't reach); however, the benefit is you do not need to worry about turning back on the allow less secure apps every few weeks/months like with Gmail.

You can also use the 1027 unit in the xx53 series, and that's where it ends.

The MPxx52 model line works fine with gmail without having to allow less secure apps. That is for older models that only support SMTP port 25. It is also new enough that the site certificate shouldn't expire for a few more years.

Sorry, I have to correct you here, Tim.
There's not a single (Ricoh) model that I'm aware of that will scan via Gmail without either allowing less secure apps, OR enabling 2FA and creating an App password for the device

You just have to follow the Google support document that I have posted on CTN numerous times. They recommend using the Google Workspace SMTP relay service to send mail from these devices because it authenticates with IP addresses. You do have to know how to administer your Google account in order to configure the relay service. The mistake a lot of people make is they think they have to use the IP address of the MFP. What you have to use is the public address of your internet gateway. Once set, it authenticates all MFP on your network.

I think the issue is that we're most often speaking about configuring scan to email via free gmail account holders (like me), and not business /workspace account holders, which I'm fairly sure is the case here.

The relay services don't apply to free accounts

Couple of replies to different points brought up:

We're reaching a tipping point in terms of security where it only makes sense to use a business account for any kind of email service, especially as a business. The cost of hosted business email is so cheap now, and the added controls in terms of administration and compliance can be worth their weight in gold. Plus, in 2021, if I get an email from jon.smith@company.com and then a scan from companyscanner@gmail.com, there's not much chance I'm opening that attachment without contacting the company first to confirm it's a real email.

If you use a 1027 PCU, be sure to do the developer initialisation as nothing past the prehistoric 2022/2027 will do it automatically on detecting a new PCU.

We don't scan-to-mail any stuff directly to external adresses - I think this is kind of unpolite and shady. And yes, gmail does not make any good impression if you want to start a legit and professional-looking business.

Most quality ISP offer business bundles that include web hosting and business email.

This series is pretty reliable, though when rebuilding the PCU, be sure to replace the gears on the mag roller and also check the gears in the developer case: if they even look slightly worn, replace the case.

Also keeping a set of the fuser pressure arms and the posts they live on can be helpful, if they get bent out of place they can end up breaking the junction gate on the duplex unit.

I have to respectfully disagree about the reliability of this model/family of machines, especially the earlier versions of the machine with the SC672 code issues with the IOB board issues. I had three major customers who had this machine as part of their fleet and it caused me a ton of headaches and serious amounts of 4 letter words under my breath.

This particular machine has 200k, so it is a relative creampuff which is good, but I also had machines that had low volume also give issues just because they were old.

Some strictly age related issues include:

Broken bushings on the driven registration roller. You can get calls for jamming and heavy duty skews. The part that breaks on the bushing is the part where the spring attaches to the bushing. Easy to change on the front one, bit harder/longer to change on the back one.

Rusted registration clutch and paper feed clutches. This series was absolutely notorious for those. Clutches are sealed, so you have to replace them. This was even in a variety of locations in climate controlled areas.

If you have the internal finisher (hopefully you don't), the glue holding the motor mounts gives out and the motor flops around, causing some noises and intermittent drive. There are 3 motors in the finisher. Typically the one that gives out is the exit section motor. We got to the point we just put extra screws in through the top plate of the mount and into the motor to fix it. (Usually, you have 1 set of screws mounting the motor mount to the motor and then a second set to mount the motor mount to the frame of the finisher. Run one set of longer screws through the frame of the finisher and into the the motor through the motor mount. Cheap fix that works just fine. Alternative is replace the motor or try a glue job, which I never did try and do not think would hold up).

Good luck on this one. I hope it works out for you and your customer.

As far as I remember this range of machines never came with internal finisher.

You must be confusing these 20 to 40 ppm models with something else.

That would be the 12-20 ppm entry level models.

Rusted registration clutch and paper feed clutches. This series was absolutely notorious for those. Clutches are sealed, so you have to replace them. This was even in a variety of locations in climate controlled areas.

And as davel said, this model line did not have an internal finisher.
