Lanier LD620C Scanner Issue Using Auto Density

    Good afternoon,
I first want to say I am not a certified copier tech although I have become somewhat familiar with my machine. I hope that doesn't matter to the masses. I use this machine primarily as a scanner.

    1. When I use auto density, either in color or gray scale modes, the first 1/2 inch or so of the image is extremely light. I notice it much more when using the ADF. I don't think I get the phenomenon when using the bed or at least it's not as noticeable. Is there an adjustment for this?

    2. Where might I obtain the scan/print alignment test sheets? Such as the S-2-1 Test Chart and others I might need?

    Thanks for any assistance!

First thing to try, and the most likely solution is just cleaning the optics.

    - Power off
    - Open document feeder
    - Remove left scale, and rear scale panels (4-6 screws +/-?) in order to remove the left contact glass and main scanner glass, and Gently slide the scanner to the right, and gently clean the lamp assy, reflector (below the lamp), and the 2 left mirrors with a very soft (preferably lint free) cloth and some isopropyl alcohol or glass cleaner.
    - Carefully clean up any other dust that has accumulated under the glass
    - Clean both of the contact glass' that you removed.
    - Reinstall and replace rear and left scale
    - Reboot and test.

    * Do not reboot until the contact glass is replaced of the machine WILL throw an SC code

Be very careful cleaning those reflectors, very easy to scratch. Also clean the laser slit glasses.

When cleaning mirrors be aware that they are first surface mirrors. That means that the reflective silver coating is what you are cleaning. It scratches very easily. Use a very soft cloth such as a microfiber cleaning cloth for glasses or camera lenses and just drag it across the surface. Do not apply much pressure as you could scratch the coating. Just because the mirrors and glass look clean does not mean they. Shine a narrow beam flashlight at an angle across the surface of the mirror. If you can see a faint circle where the light hit the surface it has been filmed by the crap in the air such as been near someone in the office who smokes.

Noted. This is the kind of thing worries me!

Well, this procedure seems to have helped slightly. When using color and auto density, I don't notice any lightening. How ever in the gray scale It is about 1/4 inch and not quite as drastic. The added benefit is a nice clean scan. Before I had a green line across the entire scan. I knew it had to be dirt, but I didn't know where.

I have adjusted the SP codes for contrast and brightness in the past for the grayscale, so maybe that is where the root of the problem lies. At the time I did it, I had no idea I could print the entire "calibration" so I have no idea where they were originally. I'll experiment a bit with that and see if I get closer.

So.....Any leads to online sources for the alignment charts? That may help to get a better scan? no?

The company I worked for used to have a main copier tech named Izzy that liked to do that. After he quit to become an inhalation tech, the first thing we did when working on a quality call was to de Izzify the machine. Now that you have the optics clean, return those settings to the birth certificate defaults and then run Auto Color Control in User Tools - Maintenance. Do copier first. This adjusts the scanner output to correct differences between the scanned image and the stored image that was printed. This adjusts the print processor.

Just call me Izzy! No change with above procedure. I had last performed that back in March 2019. It's not a huge problem. The auto density helped a lot with yellowed news print in old magazines. I'll continue to adjust contrast and brightness until I get a decent reproduction. As it is now, a gamma adjust in Photoshop makes a world of difference. Thank you for all the tips!

This is an example of what I'm talking about. The second pic is with auto density enabled.
